Motherwell was steel production capital of Scotland and also used to control water towers and the three cooling towers of the Ravenscraig steelworks until 1992. The Ravenscraig plant then shifted to casting, hot rolling and steel production. Later Ravenscraig plant closed leading to the decline in large steel making in Scotland. However it continued in a lesser amount by Dalzell works operated by Corus. Subsequently a large number of call centres and business parks were set up in Motherwell. All this lead to increase in economic growth and high level of employment in Motherwell.
William Grant & Sons whisky distillers and blenders were large employers in Motherwell. The headquarters of North Lanarkshire Council and Strathclyde Police "N" division are also located in Motherwell.
For leisure and entertainment, Motherwell has large fun park called Strathclyde Park. This park includes many sport and leisure facilities for bird watchers and anglers as there is woodland, grass areas and areas of archaeological interest including a Roman mosaic, Roman bath house and bridge. Parklife and Retrofest are two outdoor events are hosted here.
Motherwell has excellent education and sport facilities.
Motherwell will be conducting 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2011 International Children's Games in Strathclyde Park.
